How to change default units in STAAD.Pro?

We generally use metric units for analysis and design. You can change the default unit of STAAD as per your preference. Follow the method shown below to change the default units of STAAD.

1. Click on configuration in main STAAD window.

2. Open base unit tab.

3. As you can see the default units are metric, change them to English/metric as you prefer.
4. Enjoy.

How to change default design codes in STAAD.Pro?

Many a times we start modeling in STAAD and then see input file, oops the member property are shown as American or of some other country.
Why didn’t it is Indian as I am in India and designing as per Indian codes? For that, you have to make default design codes preferences to Indian. Follow the following method to do so.

1. Click on configuration in main STAAD window.

2. Open STAAD default design codes tab.
3. As you can see the default codes are American.
4. change them to Indian.
5. Enjoy.

How to extend beam in STAAD.Pro?

In previous article we saw how to extend beam in ETABS, now let us see how to extend beam in STAAD. Following are the steps to do the same.

1. Select the beam line which you want to extend.
2. Go to geometry → Stretch selected member command.
Or select the button shown in the red box which is the shortcut for stretch member command.
3. Tick on “To an existing member” and select the cursor shown against it.

4. Select the member up to which you want to extend the line.

5. Your beam line is extended to the existing member.

6. If you want to extend up to an existing node, tick on “To an existing node” and select the node to which you want the beam to be extended.

7. Enjoy STAAD.

How to extract reinforcement percentage from ETABS?

We can see reinforcement percentage requirement of columns and beams in ETABS. Many a times we want to get a summary of concrete design results, we do this by copying the table from display menu and pasting the same in Excel. Some of our smart colleague use Microsoft access for the same.

The results summery are being shown something like as shown below. This result does not show reinforcement percentage required for the columns.

Now the question is how to get the result where we can find reinforcement percentage requirement of columns? What if we can get result summery something like below?

That is a better way of presenting the results. You can do so. Just follow some simple steps shown below.
1. Run your model and do concrete design.

2. God to file → print tables → concrete frame design.

3. Select output summery and rtf format and press OK.

4. Save file and open the same. You will find a table showing the result format you wanted.
5. Copy the table and paste i…

How to renumber Beams in STAAD.Pro?

When we model the structure, the nodes, and elements gets a numerical identity. If these numbers are in sequence, it can be lot easier to find the members faster result interpretation can be done. Speed of work can be increased if we know that the elements are numbered in sequential order. Here is a way to do so:
For numbering Beams as shown below.
For beams in X direction :Select all beams of one floor level of structure. Take it to new view by right click and selecting new view. Select beams parallel to X. Go to geometry → renumber → members. Press yes to the window that asks for confirmation. Give first number from where you want to start your numbering of beams. Select available sort criteria in following sequence  Z co-ordinate X co-ordinate Click Accept. You have done it for beams in x direction.  For beams in Z direction :Select beams parallel to Z. Follow steps from 4 to 6. Select available sort criteria in following sequence X co-ordinate Z co-ordinate (descending) (it can be do…
